Writing Samples
My writing style varies based on my intended audience. Therefore, I have included a variety of samples that I hope illustrate my different types of writing.
Below is a brief description of the various works I have included, so you can pick which interest you.
1) Ph. D. Proposal and statement of purpose (13 pages with 1 page summary, 2014): this is the best summary of what I want to research and why I am interested in it. Download for full features.
2) Masters Thesis (31 pages, 2008). This is an extremely esoteric paper. For the summarily most interesting few pages, just read the first page Abstract and Part 2: Debate Issues (both are clickable links in the sidebar Bookmarks if you download PDF). I wrote it for anthropologists, people extremely well-versed in the field and the literature. I attempt to resolve what I believe to be the deepest flaw (or set of flaws) in the discipline of anthropology.
3) Nuclear policy (24 pages, 2004): My assignment for this paper was to write a subject summary and position statement for a policymaker. It was written for someone with moderate scientific proficiency but very little knowledge of the subject, and had three main objectives; to give a basic understanding of relevant concepts, including providing a base-level familiarity with terminology, to provide “sound bite” snippets of information for public- and media-facing discussion, and provide an argument platform from which to base a position. It has clickable chapters in the pdf, and has an accompanying presentation.
4) HEVN Benefits Report (2 pages, 2010): As part of the Hawaii Sustainable Business Corporation law, SBCs must report the environmental or social benefits they provide to the community on an annual basis. I wrote what is to my knowledge the first one in the state. I therefore paid particularly close attention to achieving both the objectives laid out in the law, as well as being careful to always back up my claims with empirical, verifiable data and methodology, because I wanted the report to be more than just a marketing tool.
5) Bio (2 pages, 2013)-My academic autobiography is illustrative of more narrative than expository, though it is still written formally.
6) Maui Incubator Report (4 pages, 2012): I wrote this at the request of the mayor, he asked for my analysis of the steps that Maui could take to get the MaiTai venture capital group (which I was a participant in) to stay on island year-round, as opposed to coming for only one week per year.
7) Patent Application (4 pages text, 7 pages figures, 2012)-this was a patent I applied for as part of a start-up competition. It was essentially a platform for automating meal-planning among multiple users based on preference, dietary restriction, nutrition info, and optimized meals to reduce waste and cost based on available food, its remaining shelf life, and what was on sale.
